Pastor Chris Oyakhilome “the man of God”

Of the many scandals involving some high profile church leaders in Africa, the one of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome tops the list. His wife is suing him for divorce. Whether he is guilty of the wife’s allegations or not will depend on the court’s findings and ruling.

However, Pastor Chris (as he is more popularly known) has spoken out recently to address these allegations. His speech is on the Internet for anyone to hear what he says in his defense. At the least, he said that the allegations were crazy and stupid.

Pastor Chris' main argument
The main rebuttal he uses is to argue that he is a man of God, and as a man of God he could not have done the kind of things he is being accused of doing by his wife. He said, “No man of God does something against the Lord. Are you hearing me?”

“A man of God is not just someone who worships God or who preaches God. A man of God is directed by God, set on course by God. If you study the Scriptures you will not find one man of God going against God, sinning against God,” he said.

Pastor Chris lists only two men of God in the Bible who, in his understanding, made some small but costly mistakes—Moses and an unnamed young man—but they never obstinately went against God’s calling on their lives nor did they sin against God.

He asserted, “But a man of God setting himself in defiance to the word of God and living like they are writing those stupid things that I did this and I did that...You don't know what a man of God is. I don't go in that direction. That's crazy!”

Pastor Chris then argues that the fact that a woman is married to a man of God does not make her a woman of God. That is why the wives of men of God are not listed in the Bible. In other words, whereas he is insulated from going astray, his wife is not.

He is certainly very clear that Christians should not take each other to court or go for divorce. However, once sued, he knows he is obligated to appear there and defend himself. Thus he appeals to his hearers and followers to pray for his wife, Rev. Anita.

He ended with, “We are not walking in sin and living in sin and hoping we can mix sin and righteousness together. No! We are the manifestations of his righteousness. We walk in that light only, and that is the way it’s gonna be! Glory to God!”

A false view of "man of God"
Okay, so why have I gone into all this trouble of reporting on Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s self-defense? It is because it is a perfect illustration of one of the issues I have talked about again and again; namely, the false view of “the man of God”.

As long as we think that there are “men of God” out there who are reeking with power and thus cannot fall, we will continue to have these scandals with us. We’ll continue to keep them above accountability structures until they come crushing down!

The best biblical proof that “men of God” also have clay feet and are as prone to sin as the rest of us lesser mortals is the story of David. He is called a man of God again and again in the Scriptures. Nehemiah calls him as such (see Neh. 12:24 and 12:36).

We read in 2 Chron. 8:14, “According to the ruling of David his father, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their service, and the Levites for their offices of praise and ministry before the priests as the duty of each day required, and the gatekeepers in their divisions at each gate, for so David the man of God had commanded.”

We all know what happened to David, “the man of God”. He lusted after Bathsheba who was Uriah’s wife. He had sex with her. When she told him she was pregnant, David “the man of God” conspired against her husband and got him killed in warfare.

King David then married Bathsheba, thinking that he had covered all his tracks and no one was going to know. Hence, for a long time he continued in silence with blood on his hands. It took Nathan the prophet to open the door for the skeletons to all fall out.

David “the man of God” confessed his sin against God. That was when Nathan told him that he was pardoned. Later, he wrote, “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me…[I have] done what is evil in your sight” (Psalm 51:3-4).

The obvious contradiction
Pastor Chris Oyakhilome says, “If you study the Scriptures you will not find one man of God going against God, sinning against God.” Well, here before our very eyes is a very prominent man of God who went against God and sinned grievously against him.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome says, “No man of God does something against the Lord. Are you hearing me?” Well, we must now choose between hearing him or hearing what the Bible says. The Bible shows us that men of God also do things against God.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome says, “But a man of God setting himself in defiance to the word of God and living like they are writing those stupid things that I did… That's crazy!” According to the Bible, it is not crazy. All men can do those stupid things.

I am very concerned about this. I have asked before, “Could it be that one reason why 95% of all these scandals are taking place among Charismatic leaders is because of something in the teaching itself?” I am told that it is not. Here it is in the teaching.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, one of the foremost Charismatic leaders in Africa, teaches that men of God cannot do something against the Lord, cannot sin against God, and cannot do any of those stupid things he is being accused of doing. That is a total lie.

The Charismatic world will continue to suffer hemorrhage among its top leaders as long as the views expressed by Pastor Chris continue to be pervasive among them. Sadly, the way they treat their pastors like demigods only sets them up for a loud fall.

The apostle Paul wrote thus about himself, “I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:22-24)

I will be the first to confess that I am a fallen creature in constant need of careful watch over my own soul. I need the careful watch of my wife, fellow believers, and my elders. “I’m prone to wander. Lord, I feel it; I’m prone to leave the God I love!”

  4. Pr. Conrad thanks for your writing.

My problem is with your equating false teachers like the man you write about here with everyone who is considered Charismatic, and attributing their error to the believing that the gifts of the Spirit are still for today.
First of all you make a mistake of ignoring the fact that Charismatics are so diverse and many hold on to different beliefs and doctrines.
Secondly, your argument if followed consistently would equate men who teach the Bible faithfully like John Piper and Matt Chandler but have "Charismatic" beliefs to men like the one you speak about here who are clearly unorthodox.
    This pains me.

Imagine if someone said that because some Cessationists in Baptist and Presbyterian denominations teach that homosexuality is not a sin, therefore their is a problem inherent in Cessationism that leads to this kind of false teaching. What would you say? Now I think your argument is not so different from this one.
Don't you see that it can't be cogent for many of us who love reading your stuff?
Please let me know what you think about these points.

    Your brother in Christ,
    Derrick.

    1. I feel like you do Derrick, I have long been an admirer of the pastor but of late his holier than thou attitude and belief that baptists are the best thing since Christ is sad to say the least. There are people in the baptist church who are as sinful as any other. So to lump us all in one bashet because we still believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still at work today is very hurtful. How do you explain this, durying our intercession we asked our youth to wait on the Lord to hear if He had a word for someone. One timid young man felt to tell his friend that God was saying hod on and his about to surprise you. No one thought much about it till that guy came back to testify in church that that Word kept ringing in his heart and had pulled him out of depression and God had surprised him with a job. Was it not the Holy Spirit that gave the timid young man a word of wisdom or knowledge? How can you explain the fact that my late mother in law always sent her children a message or bible passage just when they where going through things? we appreciate your trying to be a watch man on the wall and i agree that certain teachings in the charismatic movement have been taken to the extreme but let us not throw the baby out with the bath water because we want God conform to calvin;s theology. Which clearly states that God is Sovereign and so is the third person of the trinity. We will all give account. i rest my case. It's because of such an artitude that i pulled out of a baptist seminary.

    2. Derrick, sorry for taking long to reply. As you may have noticed, I rarely ever reply to comments. My desire is to leave the comments section to my readers so that they discuss and interact freely. I only reluctantly acquiesce because you have specifically said, "Please let me know what you think about these points" and you seem to really want ME to reply.

My first answer is that I am not the one calling people like Pastor Chris as Charismatics. That is what they call themselves. Also, everyone I meet around here calls them Charismatics. I think that I should be accused of error if I start giving them tags that they never give themselves.

Granted, they are giving bad publicity to innocent people like yourselves. But it seems to me that you are, therefore, pointing the gun at the wrong person. Talk to them and show them that they are going by the wrong label or at least show them that their extrapolation of truth is now error.

Secondly, if 95% of the teaching that homosexuality is not a sin is coming from cessationists, I think that I would agree with you if you question us. Ask, "What is causing this error to come almost exclusively from within cessationist circles? Could it be something inherent in cessationism?"

Finally, Derrick (and Sizwe Wako), I do not raise these questions or use a broad brush out of a holier-than-thou attitude. The church in Africa is going up in flames. The gospel is being lost. Worship is being lost. Ethics are being lost. Pardon my using the word one more time, but 95% of this is coming from people within Christianity who are calling themselves "Charismatics". This pains me. I write as I do in order to stem this tide.

    3. What about Chris and Anita Oyakhilome false teaching of creating your own reality by your words. Or is this, their marital breakdown, is what they want, and are thus confessing with their words? If they can create their own reality by their words which their confess then why has things reached this stage in their marriage? Why are they not having the best of marriage right now which is what they should be confessing all of the time. So why the marital break down if their teachings are correct? People need to wake up to these false teachers' false teachings.

These false teachers need to stop misinterpret Proverbs 18:21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit." - New American Standard Bible. What it means is when we proclaim the gospel truth we bring eternal life, salvation, to those that hear and believe it. And those that reject it and die in their sins it was eternal dearth to them. Also those who use their tongue to proclaim a false gospel are bringing eternal death those themselves, and to those who hear and believe them, see Galatians 1:6-10, and Galatians chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5, John 3:16, Roman 3:21 to chapter 5., etc.. This is what Proverbs 18:21 means, not the creating of your own reality by your words Satanic lying nonsense doctrine or teaching. Otherwise how come Chris and Anita Oyakhilome's, marriage has reached this broken down stage where its now heading for divorce? Are their words powerless, or are they confessing a broken down marriage, and divorce? Where is their faith that they so love to preach about that can create their own reality as they so love to preach about? Or are they faithless? People wake up to these false teachers, and their false teachings. Stop being misled by them. Stop supporting them and their lies. Stop it.

    4. Thank you for your response and apologies for being so harsh earlier. We are in our small ways trying to point out these short comings. However it is not always easy nor prudent to rebuke an elderly person, in this case our 'pastors' so we tend to trend very lightly. We do therefore appreciate the role that you are playing and welcome your apology. God bless

  6. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭7‬:‭27-28‬ NIV)..... MEN IN ALL their WEAKNESs.....to deny that is to deny the scriptures. The more I see and hear how people rally behind persons no matter how wrong they are the more convinced of the scriptural truths....
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. (‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭3-5‬ NIV)

  8. Ps Conrad, why did you not write a private reproving letter to Ps Chris over this issue?. CHARISMATIC as he maybe, he Is CHRISTIAN of which I know you are too. As a minister of the Gospel, and leader of your caliber, I would admonish you do so. Even Paul needed Prayers and David was smart to say" Publish it not in Gath" 1 Sam 1:20. But there we are because of our walls of denominations, we feel it is good we discuss such in this manner. So he, Ps Chris, has stated he is a 'Man of
God' whether correctly or not He needs counsel through prayer and contact from such Pastors as your selves. Remember you are a Gift to the body called for the perfecting of the saints, Eph 4:11- 16.

    1. The same can also be said about TB Joshua, his followers, and the very, very sad event of his building collapsing in South Africa that killed many people. If their words can create their reality as they so teach (misinterpreting Proverbs 18:21) then why are these very, very sad events are happening to them. These very sad events happening to them just show that their teachings are false at best, they are misinterpreting the bible to their own destruction, and the deception of others at best.

  10. Pastor Chris and false teachers like him have more in common with 2 Peter 2's list of a reprobate than with Jesus' Beatitudes. We should not treat people as believers if they give no Scriptural evidence to support that claim.

  11. Have you Never read Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.
Have you also never read how David had an opportunity to slay Saul but he didn’t because Saul was God's anointed? Even when the Amalekite came before David to bring Saul's crown and bracelet expecting a reward form David, David rent his clothes and wept and fasted for Saul and his Son Jonathan until evening when he called the Amalekite to ask him how he was not afraid to slay the Lord's anointed. He even wrote a song saying do not publicize Saul’s death least the daughters of the Philistines rejoice. Read it for yourself in 2 Sam 1. Read the whole chapter.
Bottom line is on that day God is not going to ask you to give account of how Pastor Chris or rev Anita or anyone else even your own family lived their lives. He will ask you to account for yours. Conrad Mbewe Christ is your wisdom allow him to guide you. 1 cor 1:30. Do not be quick to judge. 2. Gregory you have not understood salvation then. John 3:16 God loved the world that he gave.... He loved the world of human beings not animals and those human beings were sinners and some are still living there but he loves them anyway. To those whose eyes he has opened he says to snatch those that still live in sin to come to righteousness. What God wants is for you to pray for such ones, the false prophets, and false teachers, you who are enlightened, you that have received the gospel pray that they also must receive and be changed. That there message is false no longer, that they too must preach Christ and bring many sons to righteousness. God doesn't want anyone to go to hell, he has embraced the whole world and he expects us that have the light to shine. In situations like these where you can’t reach the person you invite God in it through prayer, prayers that touch lives in other places.

  15. It is not correct to seem to say that because pastor Chris is mightily used,we should not admonish him.The Bible says that when Paul preached, the people looked in their Bibles to see if these things were so.The Bible actually says ''Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians ,for they received the message with great eagerness and EXAMINED THE SCRIPTURES EVERYDAY to see if what Paul had said was true'' Acts 17vs11.It is not enough to defend Mr Oyakilome but bring solid proof from Scripture to support his actions. While I am not saying that Baptists are the holiest people(neither did Mr.Mbewe say this)I see that Baptists(like many Christians of other denominations)search Scripture well.Paul himself warned that Christians should not be naive nor sheepish but should “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).He certainly meant that we should examine any preaching in light of the Holy Spirit's conviction and in line with other scriptural passages. The difference between Oyakilome's church and the so-called mainline churches is that Chris Oyakilome is above the Scripture and his word counts more than the Bible and he can't be held accountable for his actions whereas a Baptist pastor has to answer for his actions to the congregation and a Presbyterian or Methodist has to answer to the synod. This does not mean that they are perfect.Derrick should examine his actions to see if he acted on personal interest or in conviction to the Holy Spirit's leading.Until we have more people like Conrad Mbewe and fewer people like ''Pastor''Chris on our pulpits, the church in Africa will head for utter destruction. Thanks Pastor Mbewe for taking time to be bold enough to point out these false teachers without fear or favor.Jesus did not hesitate to whip and overturn the tables of liars who turned the temple(a house of prayer)into a hideout for thief's.While we are not Jesus we are certainly to emulate His example. Thanks and will keep you in my prayers all the way in Cameroon

  19. The biggest problem in church (orgainsation) today is "IDOLATRY", we are not like the Bereans who made sure that whatever Paul spoke was verified in the scriptures ,if they could do that to Paul, who is Pst Chris not to weighed in light of rhe scroptures? Anything uttered from the pulpit should be weighed in light of the scriptures, but today whatever the so called Men of God say is amen even though it has no scriptural backing,...!we have so much "faith" in these men that we forget what God told us in scripture ,the scripture is sufficient and is the only tool we can use to test what we hear and see
It doesnt matter how many followers one has, remember having a big crowd is not proof of being blessed or successful,....most of us christians are asleep or brainwashed, we are quick to say amen or "glooooory", when our beloved pastor preaches we lower our guard but remember the biggest problem to christians is not Islam or Father christmas but the Wolves in sheep clothing, these are ravenous ,in it for gain, they mix lies with truth, these are more dangerous cos we feel safe around them cos we call them brethren when they are not

  20. THE BIBLE SAYS, "...KNOWLEDGE PUFFS UP WHILE LOVE BUILDS."

I have respect both for Pastor Mbewe and Pastor Chris. Why? God has used them to transform my life in character and faith, and from both, in a notable way. I salute baptists, they have something vital to offer to the body of Christ, though it's not respected by charasmatics. I salute the charasmatics, they have something vital to offer to the body of Christ, though it is not respected by the baptists.
I believe that in terms of doctrine, neither the baptists nor charasmatics have it all. Nonetheless, and interesting, what I have observed is this: while you can find a few charasmatics appreciating certain baptists' principles, you will almost not find any baptists appreciating anything about charasmatics.

Baptists are extremely critical of charasmatics as you will always find out.

    Question from God's view:

Don't the charasmatics also have the same right to be critical of baptists? If course they have the same right! As long as baptists, esp baptist leaders, don't intro-inspect themselves in this regard, they will always continue to feel superior in knowledge.

1 Corinthians 8:1 says ".....Yes, we know that "we all have knowledge" about this issue. But while knowledge makes us feel important, it is love that strengthens the CHURCH."

What CHURCH? it is the entire body of Christ.

Let me conclude: If baptists still refuse to see this point, don't be shocked to believe that they really think they are the, church 'ekklesia,' the only true church of Christ, and others like charasmatics are counterfeit Christians.

Are the charasmatics counterfeit Christians to you? Or they too are part of the church, the body of Christ?

And if your answer is that they too are part and parcel of the body of Christ, then who has made you, baptists, superior in the knowledge that puffs up, that instead of building yourselves in love, you should be assaulting your own brothers and sisters publicly as if you are of this world, because that is what heathens do?

Let every baptist answer this question without beating about the bush? Are the charasmatics counterfeit Christians to you?

  21. It is very sad is when a man of God publicly rises to rejoice over another's tragedy and scrutinises his life and words and strips him piece by piece.
Lets not be the JUDGE of another man in the name of God or trying to “stem a tide..” We will be judged by the same measure we use to judge others.
It’s not surprising that the devil would wage fierce war against a man with the type of anointing, impact and following like that of Pastor Chris. An attack like the one Pastor Chris' marriage should take the body of christ to their knees.
The fall/mistake of a man of God or any believer should take believers to their knees not to the media.
When the shepherd is struck, the sheep scatter. That is why believers should join hands and pray for men of God so that God's sheep are preserved.
Yes his defense may even be wrong but that is not a reason for a man of God to give him a public lashing and sentence the charismatic church to "suffer more hemorrhage among its top leaders..."
Touch Not my anointed and do my prophets no harm. Psalm 105:11
David understood this that is why he spared Saul’s life even though Saul was rejected by God. David still recognized him as God’s anointed. 1 Samuel 24
If he is lost, pray that God will show him the truth not only for his sake but also for the SHEEP.
MEN OF GOD SHOULD BE PROACTIVELY PRAYING FOR EACH OTHER REGARDLESS OF DENOMINATION BECAUSE ONLY A MAN OF GOD CAN FULLY UNDERSTAND THE BATTLES AND STRUGGLES OF THEIR FELLOW CLERGY.
“95% OF SCANDALS MAY BE HAPPENING AMONG CHARISMATIC LEADERS” BECAUSE 95% OF MIRACLES, SIGNS AND WONDERS ARE ALSO HAPPENING AMONG CHARISMATIC LEADERS.
THE DEVIL WANTS TO MESS THEM UP BECAUSE THEY ARE BUSY SETTING TH CAMP OF THE ENEMY ON FIRE BY:
    1. MINISTERING TO MILLIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE THROUGH THE WORD, WITH SIGNS AND WONDERS FOLLOWING; AND
    2. WINNING SOULS TO JESUS IN HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS (Mark 16:17-20).
*So yes they will have battles but they are more than conquerors.
*Yes they may fall but 7 times a righteous man may fall, 7 times he shall rise.
*Yes they may not see that they have fallen, but the GRACE of God that brings salvation has appeared to ALL men...
What good is it to confess that “im a fallen creature in need of watch.... “ yet with the same mouth cast judgement on your brethren? For all have sinned and FALL short of the glory of God.
One may need deliverance from false doctrine, another may need deliverance from the pride of life like the pharisee in Luke 18:9-14.

we must actively watch our Words, Thoughts, Deeds and motives and PRAY….
Its more than enough to be at war with the devil and his forces. But its a shame that christians today are busy adding battles on each other.
Its hard enough to have media, tabloids, etc ransack you but where do you get hope from if a fellow man of God publicly ridicules you?
Believers should not fight believers. Believers should not Judge other believers.
Men of God should not bash men of God.Lets be a brothers' keeper. Lets be agents of love, peace, hope and restoration.

And we cannot all be conservatives and cannot all be charismatic. God himself doesnt want us to be the same because he loves variety.
