However, I think the flip-side of the issue also needs to be addressed i.e. that those of us who are responsible for taking care of the missionaries do our part faithfully. Missionaries and church pastors do not have labour unions to bargain for them and therefore many are living in terrible conditions.
Last year my uncle, a minister of the gospel, went to be with the Lord after serving full time for over 25 years. I learnt at his funeral that he earned just about $50 and that was often delayed by 1-3 months. He has left behind a wife and 6 children in primary and secondary school. The church members were going to help him build a house.
The point is that those involved in the negotiations of the missionaries and pastors conditions of service should do it as "unto the Lord". My question to you regarding this post is what do you think about a couple who feel that the Lord is calling them to the mission field but they have substantial debt at home (you can probably tell I live in North America by that statement!)? I wonder how you would counsel them...to first pay off their debt and then go? That feels a little to me like the man who wanted to first go and bury his father before following Jesus. Missionaries ought not to be those who cannot make it in the pulpits and churches of their own countries ! Missionaries ought to be the cream of the crop - the sturdiest and hardiest of people who will not count their own life dear for the sake of the gospel . Perish the thought that personal comfort should ever be the motive for missionaries . Unfortunately I have seen too much of that in our own country, Namibia . Many foreign missionaries have better lifestyles here than where they came from . It is also significant to note that on account of that the drop out rate of foreign missionaries in Namibia has been appalling. There just seems to be no divine blessing on their labours .
